Stainless steels 304 and 316 are used for applications up to ~1750F, but melting does not occur until 2550F. Carbide precipitation is a concern with the 300-series stainless steels, hence why Greg did not choose to make the manifolds out of 316 or 304. Nb (SS 347) or Ti (SS 321) are commonly added to avoid carbide precipitation.

The clamps, although they may rattle and carry on, will not melt. They may, however, with prolonged temperature cycling, form a scale that may crack and spall. This occurs because of the thermal expansion difference between the scale and the parent material. Oddly enough, if they were kept at constant temperature, the actual service temperature without concern of spalling is over 1700F.
